I recently acquired this old Tobacco pipe .
The silver hallmark dates it to 1798 .
I wondered what wood it could be made from .
Any help on this pipe much appreciated B33C9DC9-FC57-43BF-9FB0-0198975A3FA9.jpeg 7F7C8D07-D62E-4577-B146-17147481C046.jpeg

Briarwood, from the root of a shrub called Erica Arborea.

    Hi Wendlekins!

The most common type of wood for pipe making is Briar, and that looks to be used on yours.

    [davey beat me to it!]

I'm not disputing your silver hallmark date. However, the decorative motifs on the pipe seem later to me; from the modeling of the face I would think more 1860-80. Just my .02.

What country are you in? I suspect the pipe has a UK hallmark? I have a large collection of clay figural pipes but this is a real stunner, does the stem have a hole for a separate mouth piece?

I’m in England and I’ve added the photo of the hallmark , I don’t think it has a separate mouthpiece.
    Glad you like it

Looks much more like 1727 or 1798. 1917...the loop at bottom right is the other direction.

Yup sorry, I made a mistake, it wasn't 1917 it's 1902, all the rest of the marks have more than just the wheatsheaf and lion.

Thank you , glad you like it .
It feels to be so much older than 1902 especially the carving and the feel of it but appreciate the advice .

I'm sure many would agree if it did have a 1798 hallmark then most pipe collectors would assume the silver wasn't original. As things stand it's all right and original. I don't collect wooden pipes but when I've been looking at clay pipes at auction I'm sure I've seen this exact pipe go up for auction on ebay, of course I may be mistaken but I think it made £100's around 5-10 years ago.

Thank you for info , I think it’s quite unusual for a briar pipe

I just found a bunch of pipes today in a clearance, don't seem to get many these days.
They are certainly not as nice as yours but one has a silver band and may be ivory or bone.

They reminds me of my uncle in the 60's, he had a pipe rack in the form of a farm gate the same as these.
