Featured Rivets Needed for Vintage Sled

Hello New Favorite Group!
Getting ready to begin restoring our family's 1950's snow Sled, but have a quick question....Any idea what type of rivet this is? Any suggestions of where to purchase them, alternatives? Thx!

 

You can look at McMaster-Carr for solid rivets But you will have to learn how to rivet. It will be easiest with copper or aluminum rivets.

That sled looks DRY as a BONE!!!! Maybe some kind of wood restorative, @sabre123 ????

 

Remember on a sled the rivets have to be "moveable" in order to steer it......



(from a random internet article): "If there is a need for a ‘pivot’, a joint that allows movement, consider using a riveted joint. Simply place a piece of paper between the two pieces of material and rivet them together.
The gap caused by the paper, allows the joint to move from side to side, a perfect pivot."

the idea with paper is good. it will disappear by itself after a while. a professional riveteer would probably take a teflon washer.

 

Maybe it is just me, but my opinion is to restore the original boards. Would think you'd like to retain the well loved/used look as a family piece. New boards = new sled on vintage runners.

 

That old wood is broken and dried out - new would be the way to go, it would be a restoration not a preservation?

 

Yup, unfortunately the old wood is way too brittle and past the point of lasting much longer. I normally believe in preserving as much of the original "patina" as possible, but new wood is the only option here.

 

HELLO EVERYONE! Well, as many of you can attest, the good ole' "Honey~Do" list has a way of sometimes jumping in front of your "Stuff I Wanna Do" list. With that said, it gives me GREAT PRIDE to present to you the FINISHED SLED discussed way back in October, 2020!!!

HaHaHa...I must admit, with all of the work put into this little project, I will probably keep it indoors and avoid using it at ALL COST!
