    dear all

my parents have a collection of cognac but nobody in the family drinks. so i am trying to gather more information on them. i have found similar ones on the net but the bottles are not exactly the same, as in clear glass vs green glass or something minor. can anyone tell me when they were bottled? and if there are any cognac experts out there, can you give me a ranking of taste?

btw, the martell came together with 2 glass etched with martell and an cut glass ashtray. promotion box, maybe?

    regards

When I still drank Cognac, Remy Martin was my favourite, that's all I can tell you.:)
Do you still have them all together?

The best place to start is by identifying the importer/distributor. Relationships between importers/distributors and brands start/stop and importers/distributors change their names so that might give you a rough time frame. Name of importer/distributor is required by law in U.S. so -- if that's where you are -- to be found on label. The graphics on the gift boxes might help dating too. The Martel gift box was probably a Christmas or Father's Day item. The inclusion of the ashtray should date it to pre-1970s. By then, the danger of smoking was widely publicized. The highest end brands are COURVOISIER and the REMY MARTIN. MARTELL and HENNESSEY were popular, widely distributed brands. The others not familiar with.

Having spent many an hour in bars and licensed establishments in many countries in my lifetime, I would say by just looking at the shape, design and labelling of the bottles these are from the mid 60`s to mid 70`s, give or take a tot or two.

Check the glass pieces in the box set for markings. These bespoke pieces were often produced by Lalique, Daum, etc.

REMY XO was created in 1981 according to www.wikipedia.org. Lots of information on the internet to help you identify.

    dear all
    FYI:

    1) hennessy XO cognac 1970s (from importer info)
    2) remy martin XO special fine champagne cognac 1980s (carafe no RX847)
    3) courvoisier napoleon cognac baccarat crystal 1960s (No B7751) (managed to find the exact same, flat seal with separate stopper in green box)
    4) martell cordon noir napoleon cognac 1980s (this was created in the 1980s for duty-free market, discontinued 1990s)
    5) renault OVB cognac 1980-1982 (quite precise date due to importer label)
    6) rouyer guillet VSOP, both bottles 1960s-1970s (damoisel bottle design was registered in 1968)

    ranking by sales 2013:
    hennessy
    martell
    remy martin
    courvoisier

thanx!! i couldn't have gotten all this together without your help and comments. such a shame i am no drinker, cos it seems i have all the big 4 cognac products! :woot::woot:

I bet they are expensive in your country too.

The most expensive beer I ever bought was in Malaysia. in 1999.
One glass of Tuborg beer, paid with an Aussie $20 bill and there was not enough change to buy another.

come over again and drink the local beers, cos with the way our ringgit is falling, beer would be so cheap today compared to 1999!!

P/S no idea how much these cognacs would cost in malaysia but i may have to look up a local auction house for off loading them.
