The Daily Mirror Mystery Photos

A couple of years ago I bought an envelope containing a set of four photographs from my local charity shop. For the past few weeks I have been digging out my old stuff and come across them, so I decided to have another go at researching who the mystery people in the photographs could be. The envelope is from the Daily Mirror newspaper and it is being sent back (I am presuming) to the owner of the photographs. The name it is being sent to is C.Bishop Esq, and then an address follows (187 Cold Harbour Lane, Hayes, Middlesex) BUT that address has been crossed out and instead another address has been written next to it (SS 'Athenic', c/o Shaw Savill Lines, 101, Queen Street, Auckland, New Zealand.
The envelope also contains a little piece of paper saying "With the compliments and thanks of the picture editor" and the letter is dated July 27th 1955.
Firstly, I have tried and tried thinking of how that name and addresses and photos tie together, but so far my internet search has come up with nothing at all. Secondly, the two people in the photographs are unknown to me (famous or not) and I cannot find anything around that date about who it could be. I have even checked The Daily Mirror archives and come up with nothing.
I am thinking one of them (the man or the woman) COULD be famous, as it is a famous newspaper and I would have thought they would only print photos of notable and famous people back then? My husband says that the woman looks a lot like Grace Kelly and the date of the photos would be roughly right for her time. I don't know.
    I have attached photos below.
    Any help would be appreciated!!

Yeah I researched about that. Just wish I knew who was in the photographs. I have attached them now. Thanks for replying!

I'm going to guess that the fellow in the photo is this Bishop himself. The note says the photo is with the compliments of the photo editor, suggesting to me that the pix are not being returned but are being sent along as thanks for the subjects' having given permission for the publication of their likenesses as captured by the paper's photographer.

Looks to me like 'Athentic' is a typo. If you look above & below it in the list you see that they gave the same name to successor ships, differentiating them as (1), (2), (3), etc. The others around it retain the same spelling from one to the next. Quite a number of their other vessels have names from classical mythology. 'Athenic' makes sense to me, while 'Athentic'...?

    If you look here

you will see two separate mentions of Athentic and Athenic

You know... at the time, those muscle man / fitness photographs were a form of soft porn. NK.

Especially the one with the girl with her arms over her head and no straps on her shirt?

Both -- male and female -- meant to be titillating.

I did a quick search and it seems that beachball was all the craze in the fifties, along with scantily clad young people in fitness-type shots :D

If I had access to newspaper archives I'd search them for you, but my subscription has run out. I think you can subscribe to the 'Daily Mirror' archives for relatively little and you have a rough date (summer '55) for any publication that came from this, so it might be worth trying?

That's the style, and the letter is dated 1955.:)

I just mean that it wasn't unusual for that era :) Which unfortunately makes it more difficult to find anything relating to these images, because there were so many of them :D

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

You could try researching who C. Bishop was. I don't know whether or not he (assuming a male) was the man in the photo. This would require figuring out who would have ships' crew listings for this ship covering the 1950s.

Searching the archives of the Daily Mirror, as Batman_2000 suggested above, would be an easier way to begin.
