    dear all

    washed these in soapy water and the black colour did not come off. there are a few white spots that look like it is corroded? it is very smooth and cool to the touch. non-magnetic. no mark but some numbers, probably a product/pattern code. it is just under 3" long and 1" wide. the etched pattern has a combination of gold yellow and silver colours. what is it made of? where and when?

    regards

    It looks like there are letters written on the sole of the left shoe. Susi? Sosi?

    From Kashmir, India. Most of the ones I've seen were brass. This is probably brass with a black finish, and the decoration some kind of white brass inlay maybe?
    The contrast is usually blackened brass with engraving showing the original yellow brass. The white could be polish, but that would have been removed when you washed them.

    tq!! :joyful::joyful:
    checked out "tiny shoe ashtray india" and they were all brass. mine's very plain :D:happy: when i looked at the pattern with a loupe, it was "silver" under the black. i think the "gold yellow" bits were added on top.

    I recognize the metal - definitely Indian. The blackened metal is just that, with either silver or another silver-colored metal hammered in. It comes from one particular region, but bedarned if I can remember if it's Kashmir or not. Age....some time after 1900, when ciggies became acceptable for ladies.

    tq to all! here are some closeups using the loupe.
    @evelyb30 something hammered into black metal :happy: but the "silver" bits look like the base metal? then there's the white spot that cannot be scrubbed off, like limescale but "oozing" out from a damaged spot.
