I feel that it is quite early say c1750-80 but haven’t found another with decoration like it in this shape although I’ve found the shape in 18thc armorial pieces.

    Any thoughts?

Aren't the bottoms a bit clean for that kind of age? But I defer to your far greater knowledge, John, and will follow with interest.

It’s porcelain so it can be two hundred years old and still look brand new if it has been looked after.

You are most probably right but I’m struggling to find this brown rim. Did find a few Japanese brown rims.

Shape is Meissen Royal Flute but it’s not Meissen. Will keep looking.

John, I'd look a bit closer to home, like in the UK maybe :pompous:, that chip looks non-hard-pastey to me ...and BTW don't forget Chelsea and contemporaries did some stuff with brown rims and were fond of copying Meissen now and again and of course, everybody was copying the Chinese...:wideyed::sour::shifty:

all very interesting, keep going, :bookworm::watching:!!

Similarities, I agree (apart from the gilding and the trembleuse saucer) however - I believe the piece in the link may not be Chinese either!

Just had an email from someone who is an absolute expert and he said this.

Most of my books are trapped for Christmas, but I have found a similar service of second half of 18th century.
Your tea bowl and saucer are Chinese, from the photo, and near to 1750.
Because the shape was more expensive to produce, their purchase price would have been greater. And probably rarer than the standard round bowl.”

Just a short note : this was verified by the Goteborg Board on Chinese items.

Hi John, good to find you doing your usual thing so brilliantly in these forums. You might remember me from our own forum years ago: Jeremy Evans.

Anyway, I can see why your cup and saucer is so puzzling, having a sort of split Chinese/European personality.

Probably won’t get you much further but the flower is reminiscent of that on a Chinese ‘pot de crème’ I bought many years ago from a dealer who though it to be an English mustard pot. Being new here, I hope I succeed in uploading the picture .

    Hi Jeremy

lovely to see you here - it’s a great forum. Yes the flower is very similar. I think your pot is most likely Chinese too.

    Best wishes

    John

He’s a senior member of an Oriental ceramics society and lives and breathes Chinese and Japanese ceramics. I don’t like to ask him for help as he gets a lot of requests but as we were all unsure I thought he would help and he did.

IMG_3840.JPG Good to see you, John. Yes, this is definitely Chinese. I was going to post a couple more pics but they were over-sized. I’ll have to see if I can resize them (iPad). Done.

Hello MT - your lidded cup is indeed a Chinese hard-paste porcelain piece and very typically so - apart from the rather odd decoration - IMO likely a custom pattern based on a a design supplied by the importer.
