    Morning People,

Have you got any idea what this is please? Its driving me mad as a mystery object. It was in a job lot of things bought at auction. I know it has no value but I just want to know what it is.

It is a spring clamp, gold tone material but no markings at all, then it has that little chain and clasp, the clamp measures about 2 inches long. Thinking caps on :D

Sorry for the same photo twice, can't seem to delete it.

Morning Skerry. Looks like a skirt clamp/lifter, to keep a long skirt from getting muddy.

Well you have done it again. Just googled that and found one almost identical. Although I have to say that with that flimsy chain I wouldn't want to lift anything heavier than a silk dress, must be a bargain basement version

Why I just didn't put this post on here straight away I don't know, spent weeks pondering this one .... cheers nice people.

By the way, one day I hope to be able to contribute to this site and give some people answers to questions instead of just asking all the time ;)

Suspect the chain never had to bear the weight of the skirt, that it is just to keep the gizmo attached to your costume when not in use. Think you would want to manage the raised fold of skirt by holding onto it.

Doesn't look the least bit bargain basement to me.

You already contribute by asking questions. We all learn from questions, that is the only way to find answers.;)

Oh I have loads of things here that I don't know what they are, I will post some more then over the coming days, I just didn't want to seem that I was always taking and not giving but your statement is true about always learning by questions. Cheers

    Glove holder.

    From this page:

Finally in use during the 1930-1950s were glove holders. I’ve seen confused people on Ebay selling these as skirt lifters, which they most certainly were not. Ladies would hook the chain around their purse handles or through a button hole and keep their gloves safe while dining.

Now that makes a lot of sense becasue as I said earlier on, I wouldn't like to lift a heavy skirt with it. Thank you ever so much for giving me the definitive answer on this and the photo of the one still on its orignal sale card seals it.

We were talking earlier on in this thread about always learning by asking questions and we can definitely say that we have learnt something new today. :D

Thank you once again, very helpful and informative.

I have seen them being sold on e bay as skirt lifters also. It makes me feel really old to remember them in use as glove holders.

I don't remember these being used, but used to have one of a different style. I bought it in an antique shop because I'd never heard of them! I don't think I have it any more.
