When he passed away I got it. I have always been curious if it is really from 1940. I know he was always a member of the National Rifle Association. I was hoping someone might know of the origins of something like this. It is not in the best of shape and faded. It appears to be some kind of a certificate given out when someone joins the NRA. It has a date on it of January 29th, 1940.

No reason it can't be from 1940 & yes, doesn't look like an individual membership certificate. It is recognizing some local organization as an affiliated chapter (or whatever they have) of the NRA.

I can not decipher the first written word of this certificate.
    ??? Top Gun Club
    Beaumont Texas
This would be the organization affiliated with the NRA.

Surprisingly bellicose for 1940. Ares and the dogs of war.

Yes, but the U.S. still had an isolationist policy.

It's an NRA certificate. To the left of Ares, the text speaks to national defense.

Yes, I understand that. It's interesting that the NRA's policy differed from that of the U.S. government.

  12. You are right! I did not see that before!! He did belong to that Gun Club, We went there many times but that was back in the 70's. My memory is not as good as it used to be.

I am glad I found this web site. It is like having experts and an extra set of eyes at my finger tips!
