I have this old surveyors compass made by E. Kraft &Sohn in Vienna.
The company specialised in scientific instruments, and were in business 1823-1903.

The compass has obviously had a rough life, and some parts are missing. The box has a crude repair to the lid. The glass is obviously missing, and the mechanism that locks the needle against the glass is gone. From the marks on the wood, it seems there has been something round attached where the small hole for the needle locking pin should have been. Im, wondering if this is all for the locking mechanism, or if something else has been attached at the same point. The hole in the lid also indicates that some space was needed for a part.

I have not been able to find pictures of a similar compass, but maybe someone here knows?

    Hi,
Just a guess but it looks like a washer and a thumbscrew is missing.
