Why do you want to do a scratch test?
    What are you looking for?
If it is grey metal under the area I pointed out in post #3, it is spelter also called pot metal. Not sure what other info you are looking for.

I suggested the scratch test. Did not think it was ever established that it is grey metal seen in post #3. Agree that if it is, there is no need for a scratch test.

For clarification, a scratch test is a deep scratch in the metal to determine if it is plated or not and what the base material is made of. It is done on the bottom where it will not show. Spelter (pot metal) or other metals such as Nickel and aluminum will show silver. Brass will show gold. Copper will show reddish and bronze will be similar to the brass but darker in coloration.

I might add that spelter, once oxidized, turns grey. Hence, if it is showing grey where there is base metal exposed, you have plated spelter.
