There's not a whole lot to go on. The only thing I can think of is something that includes "SILVER." Normally the "mounts" are designated as "white metal," as in WM Mounts, though. Or BM Mounts, as in Britannia Metal Mounts. Given the centering of the word silver, those 2 possibilities are both too long. It may be that the full impression is "STERLING" on the first line and "SILVER MOUNTS" on the second.

Since there are no other marks, it's tough to say whether the whole thing is sterling, though. And I have no idea who the letters in the oval are for or where this was made. I suspect the pattern name is what EXETER is meant for.

WOW!! There is really NOTHING to attempt to "pull out" from in front of that 'R' in front of MOUNTS.....But it's a pretty looking little (?) box!!!!

Did you find any answers on your box? I have a very similar item but mine has a crown. And says silver mint - not mount

Anyone else come across Joseph Elliot & Sons? They were from England, so Exeter could be Exeter england? They made knives, flatware and silver plated items.

I think in that Old English Text in the oval above, there's a J, and then someone made a feeble attempt at an H, and then an S......
