I won this at a auction for a antique shop that was going out of business. At first I was excited - I thought I had a civil war era gun powder cask, but then I found a small faucet on the side & I started thinking it was a water cask.
BUT, then I found that the cap was made of metal - and now I'm thinking it's too new to be civil war - especially if it was made to carry extra gas! But the faucet is so small - trying to fill up a gas tank in war would take a awful long time as it trickled out of that little faucet doesn't make sense either.
Can anyone tell me what I have - and how old it may be?
Thanks - I appreciate any help.

That's it! Can't find a red one though - any ideas about color? It appears old?

    Good link, Terry.

Any odor inside? I'd think if it was used for gasoline, kerosene or rum, even a long time ago, it might still have some odor. Water of course would not have an odor....but the red paint suggests something other than water to me, much as present-day gas cans are generally red.
