Featured Help ID a desk please

My wife is really wanting a antique desk from Evansville IN because that is where her father and family is from. We found this one and they have a note in the drawer that is claiming the desk is a Karges which I know built in Evansville. The problem is that I don't trust notes. Can anyone help us with this?

Ok....as nice as that is I'd be shocked if it wasn't labeled, stamped on marked somewhere.
Look everywhere, in, outside and under any drawers, doors and the back.

To me it looks more 1920s, vaguely french in style. It almost looks like a piece of hotel furniture. That price seems terribly steep,you can get far nicer antique desks for that much these days. I could be wrong though.

 

Vaguely French because of bombé base. Does look a bit utilitarian.

It might be. You could contact them. I doubt it is 1886. The drawer pulls look later. Early 1900s.
What do the dovetails look like. What kind of hardware? Screws?

I just read the company history. They started in 1886. The son brought design to the company after WWI.

"After WWI, Albert’s son, Edwin Karges Sr., an artist at heart, joined the company. After traveling Europe, Mr. "K" convinced his father to try some of the unique and traditional designs of European furniture. Because of Edwin Sr.’s designs, Karges Furniture pulled away from the pack with elaborate, carved case pieces and was set on the path to becoming the company it is today."

I wouldn't trust the note either. Could be Karges but might not be. Would think this piece post WWI. Price seems steep to me. Here in Central IL, even $200.00 at retail would be pushing it. Your market may vary.

 

I'd be guessing 1920s/30s with the hardware and the green. The $275 sounds steep to a dealer, but if you're buying it to live with it that's not bad. Just try and find anything made that well know and see where the prices are on those. Or don't, if your heart can't take the sticker shock. Even Ikea would charge more for a piece of flatpack nastiness that would fall apart after a few years.
