Featured Total Ban On Ivory Sales In The UK Proposed.

So it begins....
Proposals are under way for a total ban on Ivory here in the UK.
It won't stop Elephants being poached and I'm SO against this

 

What are the rules for selling old ivory here?

The short form is that unless you have serious documentation, don't bother trying.

 

As Ivy said, it won't stop elephant poaching. A useless, purely symbolic action.
They should focus on what's going on now, spend the money on supporting those wonderful African wildlife guards who risk their lives daily in the struggle against the heavily armed poachers. That is what elephant and general wildlife protection really means. Make sure there are more guards and more resources available to them.
Put pressure on Asian countries to clamp down on the illegal traders. Offer to help them enforce their laws.
And leave truly antique art, musical instruments, etc alone.

I SO agree with all that...
Antiques dealers are going to be badly affected by this, People like me who have legitimately collected Ivory will now see their collections worthless, I collected mine because I love them but I always thought that if I needed/wanted to sell them I could.

If I thought for a second that this would stop these wonderful creatures being slaughtered I could maybe accept it but all it will do is push it underground.
We are all being penalised because of heartless greedy b******s.
And of course there is the political aspect of it....

 

The Chinese have recently shut many of the their ivory factories which has to be good thing..

 

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is changing the regulations to allow hunted elephants and lions into the USA.

 

He tried. Caught cold at it, from what I remember. I haven't been able to sell any ivory here at all for quite a while due to state laws. Antique pianos and furniture etc with a paper trail might be OK, but any ivory still here I either have to gift away or wear myself.

 

Same with me, I have a couple of pieces left from lots I bought years ago.

 

I think it will be a chance for me to buy some nice pieces cheap. I'm not planning on selling any ante-mortem anyway.

I do think the idea is totally misguided.

 

I'd call it flat-out stupid. Elephants killed 50 years ago can't get any deader, and didn't anyone think that part of the demand for new pieces is being caused by not being able to buy the antiques?

 

Why would they. It’s all emotional not factual.

 

Common sense is not a requirement for a political career, true enough. That seems to be universal.

It was the same thing in the 1970s with fur coats. Thousands of fur coats were burned at a huge bonfire, including very rare snow leopard coats. If those coats were sold a lot of animals could have been saved instead of wasted.

Sotheby's and Christie's don't sell ivory anymore since a few years...

 

I'm sure I will be tempted if I see anything I like that's really cheap.

 

I am not saying I agree or disagree with the possible law, but... we all know that if it were easy to sell antique ivory when new ivory was banned a lot of faked antique ivory would quickly become available!

 

It was before anyway, but at least it might cut down on the poaching.

I think I just bought some of the real thing today. It was in the Ill Will at a whole two dollars. The beads looked like plastic, but the barrel clasp has what I swear are schrager lines.
