    Good Day All

I wonder if anyone could suggest a date and pattern name - and any other interesting information - for this little platter which came from my Grandmother's cabinet many years ago.

    All help gratefully received.

Cannot find anything for pattern 1021, though style is typical Mason's

Mark is not one I can recall seeing (though many similar) and I was interested to see the underside decoration, also the unusual border

No indication of England/Made in England or a registration mark

My guess for date would be early 19th century, but I'll wait for a Mason's expert to come along and correct me!

I'm not familiar with Mason's platters but it's interesting that the base is done in the same way as early Chinese Canton platters.

Looking at some others online it would seem that this base is common on old Mason's platters. Just curious as to whether it's a way to copy Chinese style or not.

Anyway, the pattern on your platter is some Imari or Japan style.

    I noticed the same thing.

Which makes one wonder if the Canton platter shown a couple of months back, might not be English copying Chinese.

I think Chinese platters are known to have that type of base.

So you think this is a Chinese copy from years ago?
Depends on how long Grandma had it. Not sure the Chinese were copying the English marks until the 1980s-90s.
Of course, I could be wrong. I don't know pottery as well as you do.

I really don't have any idea on whether it could be a Chinese copy. I know there were Mason's copies of some things but that's about all I know.

I was more or less just musing about whether the English might have copied the way the base was made on Chinese platters while they were copying the Chinese Imari style of decoration. (noting of course that "Imari" is Japanese though much of the Imari style ware came from China)

I think in this case, the English were copying the Chinese or Japanese. It went back and forth and still does. Good design moves around.

The design certainly looks like what I've learned to expect from Mason's - but I am not versed in this area.
    Just appreciative.

In the other thread, about the Chinese platter. I didn't think the base looked the way a Chinese base should look. Now we have the one here with the Mason's mark.

I don't know the answer. Just find it interesting.

The other thing. Blue Willow was an English pattern. Not a Chinese or Japanese pattern. They copied the English.

Regarding your query of how long my Grandmother had it, she passed away in the early '70s and the stuff she kept in her cabinet was old family stuff. She wasn't someone who bought decorative china, she had loads of it from the past.
