Odd portrait painting- odd inscription on back

Got this at one of the mega-thrift stores today. Seemed almost childish at first but the more I looked at it the more it grew on me. There's an inscription in pencil on the back of the canvas - pictured.

"Felix the cat - thanks for all you do for me. ... Can you see me - can you hear me."

Then next to that I think perhaps a signature( Something Something Mark) and then "2002- JAIL"

This might just be junk to some - but I think it's interesting at least - and I actually get intrigued looking at it - like - who is this guy? If anyone can figure out the signature would be appreciated - otherwise I'm mostly posting just to share - but your thoughts are welcome - revolted or otherwise -ha.

Instead of a signature, might that say UNSIGNED WORK, 2002, JAIL?

Something screams "self-portrait" to me.

Probably a portrait of the guy who was so helpful. Looks like he has had a hard life, not surprising.

 

I also find it quite compelling and would have bought it, for sure. I'd hang him in the guest loo to stare at people ...

 

I really like this. It does remind me of some character in a movie but I can't remember which.

I wonder if that word in the middle might be "thinking". Can you see me thinking or can you hear me thinking...something like that.

(I have a painting bought at a yard sale that seems to be from a mental hospital...not sure it it was by a patient or just someone thinking about it. It's gloomy but I like it too.)

 

The "Can you see me, can you hear me" reminds
me of the lyrics from the musical by the Who, "Tommy".
And the guy actually looks like Pete Townsend to me.
I like it. I would have bought it too. The artist has captured a lifetime in those eyes.

You're right - he does favor Pete Townshend just a bit... I thought of the lyrics too but didn't make the connection to Pete.

 

I can't see the likeness. I don't think he ever wore his hair like that.
