I love the exotic. When I first glanced at this vase, I thought it had three dimensional flowers around it. Close up, I realized that these were really rock bits under the glaze - some with bright red spots. I turned it over and saw the Handmade Iceland Art Lava Ceramics label with GLIT SH impressed in the bottom. On another shelf was this decorative plate with the Lava Glit Iceland with hand painted initials on the bottom. The plate also has some red spots on the lava bits, as well as orange bits. They appear to be from the same source. The vase is 8 inches tall and the plate is 7 inches in diameter. I was hoping that someone might be familiar with Icelandic Ceramic Art, and could tell me more. Any help appreciated.

Thank you Johnny. I love rocks and have a piece of reddish lava that I bought at Lava Beds National monument years ago The plate is elemental and looks to me like a whirlpool of lava. I think the vase is quite sophisticated not just things stuck on the sides but as I said like flowers applied to the sides. I think the red color is applied to give the idea of red hot lava. I’ll have to look up German lava

I don't think it's the same as "fat lava", which is caused by a chemical reaction in the glaze. It's more like granulated material (lava, I expect - there's lots of lava in Iceland) fused to the ceramic surface.

I've had 2 Icelandic vases and knew nothing about either. One had only a foil label. The bottom of the other was impressed "Funi Island".

There's lots of tourism in Iceland - it's one of those places where housing is tight because there are so many Air-BNBs. I suspect most of the pottery is destined as souvenirs.

A lot of the pottery has this very characteristic appearance.

CXGirl Thanks for tracking this down. I'm getting the distinct impression that there are two periods of this work. I want to find out how to determine if mine are Old Glit or Big Glit. I wonder if I could ask this museum about it?

From what I gather from the link you gave me is that Iceland itself is discovering its own artistic heritage.

FYI, Island is Iceland in Icelandic, so your piece probably says Made in Iceland, twice.

Thanks for explaining this. I looked for Funi Island, when MOS posted this and couldn't find it.

Thank you. There were a lot of donations of Scandinavian pieces, so this collector either had a specific interest or was from around the upper north. Many of the pieces were very nice, but not unusual. These seem to be art.

:joyful: It was me, but I only « loved » it and the poster thanked me for that, that’s why my name appeared.:)

Funny how our past comments come back in unexpected ways. I was trying to glean as much information as possible and was pleasantly surprised to see your name.
