Featured French Jardiniere - anyone know what its worth?

Discussion in 'Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain' started by Charlie Harvey, Feb 4, 2018.

  1. I'm clearing out my great aunts house and found this. She seems to think it came from France and was bough to the UK after the war. I've worked out its a Jardiniere - but can anyone tell me if its worth anything?

    Welcome to Antiquers Charlie.

You will need better pictures, and one of the bottom also.

    It could be majolica......

Certainly looks majolica, and the pink is typical of British stuff. Need better photos, indeed.

Welcome to our forum Charlie!!!:happy::happy:

The folks here will need a picture of the bottom even if there is nothing there that you can see. Sometimes the color of the clay or even the way the bottom is finished can give clues as to age or origin.

If there are any marks they will need good clear close ups of all marks. Also some measurements will help.

I do know the Majolica market isn't what it was a few years back, but little of the PG&P market does. However this looks to be an interesting piece with some age so the pottery folks may be able to give some clues as to how you can find out its value.

  7. Thanks everyone - I'll get some more detailed pics on here a.s.a.p.

Good job on the photos!!:happy:

We have some really great folks here who know their pottery including several that live on your side of the pond. ;):):) You may have to be patient as not everyone stops in every day.

For those folks on this side of the pond it is approximately 13 1/2" x 5" x 5". :D

For folks in the British Isles (other side of the pond) as well. Charlie could be from down under? Or he is just very precise.

Hi Charlie! I hope there is someone here that has more experience than I do with majolica. I've only handled at most, a dozen or so pieces.

The base & interior photos look suspect to me.

Hopefully there is help on the way.

    Hi Charlie!

Hopefully those with more experience with majolica will be able to help.

The interior and especially the base photos seem suspect to me. Hopefully I am incorrect.

I apologize for the double posts. I tried to get rid of my own quote, failed, and thought I had deleted the original.

    Edit did not help me.

I'll second that. Not the same shade, but as an example, this is Minton:

I'm on the fence. Colors on older majolica are usually more within the lines (for lack of a better phrase). and not usually in such a limited palette. The bottom is also sloppy. On the other hand, it doesn't look like either Chinese or Mexican majolica unless there are better reproductions out there that I'm unaware of. Perhaps the information below will help.

  19. Thanks Don - thats really helpful.

My instinct is that it is not a reproduction piece given the criteria in the article you sent - it could just be a poorer quality original!
