    Hello

Today I have the nicest antique I have ever bought. Hopefully someone can help with the details. Heres what I think I know:

Glass snuff box mounted in 18ct gold, enamel? painted on mother of pearl.

I think the stone is a cabochon sapphire. I'm not sure about the paintwork being enamel. It looks raised in places, the pheasants and trees look three dimensional. I'm not sure about the gold mark either. Also don't know the maker/country/age.

    6cm width, 4.5cm depth, 2.5cm height

    Please help and admire.

    Thanks

That is beautiful. The lid might be reverse painted. Have you tested the lid or body? Might be rock crystal.

What is on the underside of the lid? If it's paper, then that could be the substrate for the painting, but it's a bit incongruous exposed like that.

It's painted directly onto mother of pearl. I haven't done any sort of technical test, but the lid and body both feel warm when left at room temp, so I'll stick with glass.

Sorry, rushing a bit while on hold with customer service - unless your pics are deceptive, appears to be reverse-painted intaglio, backed with mother of pearl, and as suggested, good possibility it's rock crystal...

Very nice! Wouldn't you love to know the history? The person who bought it new must have been wealthy.
