Hello folks, I'm looking for some assistance in identifying a yard sale find.

I found this set of five stamped copper medallions recently, each depicting what appears to be a mythological creature. One very clearly has a gargoyle; there's a pair of what look to be vultures, but may be cockatrice (in keeping with the mythological theme), and a pair of lizard-things wearing cloaks which I'm calling basilisks. The pieces are very thin copper and I would guess that there used to be glass beads where the eyes are.

These were clearly not meant to be stand-alone pieces and I'm hazard that they were mounted on something wooden at one point: a couple of them have the remains of a type of red wax or mastic on the back which would have held them in place. It's also possible, given the rough finish around the edges, that they were mounted within a frame of some kind. But this is all guesswork on my part. The previous owner had no insights to provide, she had found them while cleaning out her attic and had no recollection of how they arrived there to begin with. There are no makers marks or identifying marks of any kind.

A few solid hours of Googling have turned up nothing even remotely similar, so I'm hoping someone here may have a few insights on where to look next. Thank you for the help!

Would it possibly be worth googling copper molds? Perhaps since there are two of them they are molds?

Can you post a photo of the "wax" on the reverse side"?

They look like fantasy designs with some ancient and medieval inspiration.

Here's the reverse of two of them. You can see the wax along the gargoyle's back, and a big chunk of it on the left of the second image. medals 1 reverse.jpg medals 2 reverse.jpg

I had not thought of that! I will be looking.

College art project/Renaissance fair with fantasy,D&D,mythical theme.Doubt they were a craft kit,the red"wax" appears to be chasing pitch and the black areas appear to be burned pitch.

That's not a bad call. I'm going to keep looking around but this is certainly a reasonable guess.
