Featured Painted plate with Ship and Waves

    I really don't know if this is an old plate or a new reproduction - it is marked HP V on the back and I don't know what that stands for. The painting all seems hand drawn and the waves and dots along the edges are raised. The flat looks American. When I first saw it, I thought of the China Trade porcelain, but I don't think it's that old. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Yes, I see that, too. I think it's the waves and maybe whales tails?

    It should read "The flag looks American" not 'flat'!!! Sorry. Also, it's a full size dinner plate 10 1/4" wide.

    Yes. The waves are also seen in Chinese art, but the way the Japanese do it always looks more controlled, with very precise spacing. Like that very triangular wave part in the central design, very organized, so to speak.
