I just bought this unusual bowl on eBay. It’s 8cm tall and 9cm in diameter and is hand painted with the Pak Choi pattern. There’s a dry band inside the rim which suggests it possibly had a lid.

It’s porcelain and quite translucent despite being very heavily potted. It’s crazed and stained
heavily but I don’t think this is modern fake crazing.

I think it’s mid 19th century Chinese but would welcome other opinions.

    Thanks

    John

I could be wrong, but it looks Western to me. Maybe Continental Europe?

That much crazing is likely artificially created. That bit on the underside might be a "mark" in which case not oriental in origin.

BTW on this side of the pond the plant is called "bok choi."

    Thank you Bakersgma

Yes I know it’s Bok Choi over there.

It’s not a mark on the underside. I’m pretty certain it’s not deliberate crazing - no need to try and fake a piece that’s not valuable and too patchy staining to be deliberate.

My 10c worth. The crazing looks almost too even to be old. Does the crazing extend through the top glaze I cant see in the pictures. If it is a gold rim. I would have expected it to be worn? - A very pretty piece though.

Yes, it looks just as intentional as any other intentional crazing. The gilded(?) bands are over the crazing. That doesn't mean it is intended to deceive, some manufacturers like the effect.

If that's Chinese I'll eat my Bok choi - no - my hat.

If that wasn't painted quite so wonderfully I would say this was a bit of Royal Copenhagen ...but unmarked?
Didn't they do a crackleware usually with some kind of red and gilt something like this? I think it was them anyway and too lazy to check.

Thank you all for your input.

I’ve done more research and found a number of enamelled crackle glazed pieces on The Saleroom. All sold as Chinese by reputable auctioneers.I’ve attached a photo of one.

In addition I have not found any examples of the Bok Choi pattern on porcelains from anywhere other than China. So I’m still inclined to stick with my initial thoughts

It’s not a valuable piece but it’s attractive.
