I have a late 19th century apotechary jar that says "Tinct. lavand. arom." on it. Was it something lavender-related?

So basically something similar to lavender essential oil? Maybe a bit more diluted.

I googled "tinct" and somewhere it said that means a dye or color / tint. Confusing.

Apothecary names are all Latin based. All you need is to learn Latin to read them straight off. Guesses are correct, of course. Lavender is lavendula formally.

An extrraction, with alcohol or water usually, from some herb or plant is usually known as a tincture.

A tincture as AF said is something diluted or mixed with alcohol. So that'd be tincture of lavender oil or something of that nature. The most famous tincture that most people are familiar with is Tincture of Opium.

Once found in a charity resale shop what was the early 20th century Canadian equivalent of what now would be the pocket sized Physicians' Desk Reference. Very little in it was anything we would now regard as medication. Most of it would fall under flavors & fragrances: oil of cinnamon; oil of peppermint, etc. Recipe for the world's best pill had sugar as the main ingredient.

Recipe for the world's best pill had sugar as the main ingredient.

Given the state of pharmacy, medical knowledge, the placebo effect, and that most ailments go away of their own accord, I would say at the time the sugar pill was as good as they'd get most of the time.
Even nowadays it should still be pretty effective most of the time.
