Featured Texas listed artist Mollie Crowther or not?

Mollie L. Vining Crowther was active/lived in Texas, Louisiana. Mollie Crowther is known for landscape paintings-Texas bluebonnets, teaching.

Could these be from her?





Mine are miniatures 5" x 7" canvas glued to board.
Here is one of hers I found. the sig looks the same.

 

Did you see the one on Worthpoint (where they actually have a way to see a closeup of the signature?) I'd say yes.

 

Looking at some of her other works online the signature looks kind of the same but the painting itself looks different. Yours doesn't look as detailed as some of the ones online. Could be someone trying to copy her work

 

Yes and so far a few others. I am sure now.
These were framed together in one cheap frame and I hesitated because i couldn't find anything searching on my phone in the thrift. I am glad i grabbed them.

 

I see what you mean on some of her works, But then there are others not so detailed.

 

It could be she did this painting later in life. I agree its not as crisp as the others.Pretty though,and texans love bluebonnet anything!

 

They're fine Mikey, nice pick! Unless they're soiled badly a little Grumbacher restorer would help, they'd pop at least a little more and being unframed isn't helping.

 

I had never heard of Grumbacher before.
I'm sure they need to be cleaned and brightened up.
They are probably 100 years old. As she died in 1927

 

A little cleaning, frames, and better lighting makes a big difference.

Just a little soapy water on a towel. Small areas then wiped clean with damp cloth and dried.

 

Mikey.....I have not heard of your artist, but I agree with Johnny that Texas bluebonnets are quite desirable.

I have my own story about a Texas bluebonnet painting.

I had the opportunity to buy a estate which contained many many pictures....mostly paintings. In fact I'm unsure now if there were any prints.

One picture stuck out amongst all the others.

It was a small painting......mostly blue in color.

I could not read the artist signature. So I brought it to my shop and hung it one the wall looking for help.

A friend was able to read the name......Julian Onderdonk!!! Look that up!

I googled and found him to be very desirable

I couldn't believe the prices I was seeing.

I kept it for about 10 years and enjoyed it.

Finally after talking it over with my daughter, I decided to submit it to Skinner's (AR). I brought it to them (about 30 miles from me) and it was estimated to bring between 10,000 to 15,000.

It was small...I forget the dimensions, and it needed restoration,

Well, my little Texas Bluebonnets realized a price of $70,000 at Skinner's. That was about 6 years ago. It enabled me to buy a new van....my old one was 15 years old and needing more and more repairs.

I would defintely look into your pieces before you just decide to list on eBay.....

If I can bring up my painting, I'll post it.

I used to be able to bring it up in the past just for fun, and just did try to post it here, but my particular painting is not showing.

Here is my own painting of Texas Bluebonnets. It's about 3'x4' in size. I painted it as a Christmas gift for my father to hang over the piano. It was rescued after Hurricane Katrina and is currently out on loan as a working painting! It is supposed to be featured in the movie, "The Highwaymen" about the men who tracked Bonnie and Clyde down in Texas!

I had to fill out a 1099 for it to work in the movie! Found out - almost no paintings in movies anymore unless the artist him/herself can sign off on their own artwork. The work release I signed allows for the "exploitation" of my paintings too! And they are fully insured.

Wow that's an amazing story. I contacted Texas fine arts Inc. His thoughts were $800 each and he agreed with the id of my artist.

 

I think that because they are so small, it is hard to compare them to her larger works. Can't really fully execute in your normal way in a small format.

 

Best of luck with the paintings. Hopefully they will go far beyond the estimate as mind did.

Thank you all for the wonderful help and comments. It may be to far along in this thread to ask more questions but i was wondering on how to sell them as far as a set or separate? This is the mat that came with them and i was thinking if they were to be sold as a set then This would be the way to display them. Either way i have to find either matching frames or one for the double mat.
Noting that with the mat they would have to be framed behind glass.
