Help, please, ID maker of pewter mug (1890's to 1940's)

I'm wondering if anyone can help ID the maker of this pewter barrel-style beer mug. The side not shown carries an insignia from a dog show that took place annually from the 1890's thru the 1940's, but that's the best I've been able to do to date it.

I can't even tell what the first letter of the mark is supposed to be. I would have guessed it was an S, but then, the 2nd letter is an S, and the two do not look the same. I have perused the pewter marks on way-back, A-Z, but I haven't found this one.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

note: the blue at upper right in the photo is not on the mug; it's just a reflection

    Thanks very much!

I've only seen that type from Royal Selangor (before the Royal was added). Between the walls it is stuffed with old wet newspaper.

There is a pewter society website, maybe check there.

Thanks, Hunting! GS is one of the "possibilities" I considered. I'll keep looking.

Thanks, Terry. By "type", do you mean the "barrel" style mug? That "wet newspaper" thing is so odd!

That's one of the marks used by Philadelphia-based Hartford Sterling Co. (1900 to early '30s), despite the name, primarily makers of silverplate - not unusual for silver manufacturers to produce a pewter line...

Boy and you think artists have hard to make out signatures:rolleyes:. You'd think these big companies would do a better job making things easy to read.

With the reference to Pat's pewter site and to the 925-1000 section on silverplate, which was his baby, this thread put a huge lump in my throat - so miss him, our discussions on silver and pewter, and just his general goodness...

:( Such a generous, knowledgeable guy. Gone so suddenly - and way too soon.

Thanks so much, Cheryl and Bakers! Now, why didn't I think to check the silver sites? Duh...

Anyway, thanks again, both of you. I, too, feel that "lump" whenever I go to one of Pat's old sites. He was always so generous with his time and knowledge.

I'm sorry I joined after Pat was no longer here. He sounds like a great guy and I have a collection of antique pewter I would love to bounce off someone knowledgeable. Could you say what his old website was? I can look it up in the archives.

Jeff, quite sadly, Pat has been gone for quite a long while now. (I'm not even sure if he was ever a part of THIS site... but he was well-known among those in the antiques trade...)

His old pewter site has been closed down for ages, but this is where you can find it on the Way-Back web archive:
