Too bad the hair pin is missing. I see there are a lot of reproductions after the artist but I don’t know who to tell original or not?
I don't know either, but she is beautiful. The others I've seen have the stamp on a smooth base, I don't know if that is an indication of anything?
Beautiful!!! As it is terracotta, I don't think it is a repro, but this is only my guess Have you seen this bronze one (expensive!)? http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions...odern-contemporary-southeast-asian-art-hk0565
So it does, good call kyra. I am obviously not fully awake, as usual. Ok kard, send the girl to me, I'll make her a nice Laotian hairpin.
Sorry for my late reply. It’s bronze. The chip is on the wooden base. The pin is supposed to be screw-on as the hole on the head is threaded. Don’t know hot it got lost.
Ah, thanks for the update about the material Guesses still open for genuine or not, unless you contact an expert in these....
How is she attached to the base? Add a pic of that should help Others I googled are marked on the back of the neck. One, head not bust, described as bronze CASTING sold for cheap, I'd have grasped her https://www.rubylane.com/item/60437...Head/Vietnamese-Bronze-Bust-Laos-Woman-Nguyen
And a track to explore: http://www.asianart.com/phpforum/su...Vietnam)&PHPSESSID=ud1aqu5b98ejos8pitqou53nb3
The bust is attached to the base with screws/bolts. I’m not sure if the casting quality is good enough to be an original piece. The marks are also not as crisp as on other examples that I’ve seen. However, I am not able to find an identical sculpture.
Still nothing that I can find wearing a breast cloth. I don’t know if that is a good or a bad sign for being original.
I saw another one today but did not buy it because it was 5 times more expensive and the quality of the casting looks worse to me. The marks are better defined but that’s because they are on the opposite side that is with more smooth surface, on both pieces. Also missing pin.
Looks like it has a thin layer of gilding, now worn. I prefer yours. The garment is not a breast cloth, but a scarf, worn over her bodice. Like these Laotian girls are wearing:
