    OFF TOPIC:
Figtree, I have a brain to pick with you. I just acquired three old actor photos, I'd love to hear what you think of them?

    Hi Bronwen,
I'm no expert, but when I see a clearly incorrect listing that troubles me, I take a few minutes to send a very quick email alerting the seller. It somehow just makes me feel like I've contributed to the "correctness" of the world, and that's personally quite satisfying. If they ignore me, challenge me or just dismiss me, that's their choice. I've already moved on.

The scholarly courtesy is to ask if you want to publish it first yourself.

OR, an equivalent that got some laughs during the Oliver North congressional hearings a while back: “...potted plant.” I think I’ll start dropping that one at appropriate times from now on.

“Hey you #@&*))”&, whaddya think I am, a &=$&#@ potted plant!

Bronwen, we make identification omissions (and a few mistakes!) and are always glad when a well informed Ebayer lets us know.

We have one unmarked piece on now which we have suggested may be Caughley or Coalport but that we do not know. We may get a message before the auction ends, in which case we will add info to the listing, but sometimes after an auction ends we get a message from the winning bidder on the lines of " best first period Worcester tureen I've seen on Ebay and such a reasonable price, delighted!!"

Who was it either on here or the eBay boards bought a piece of glass for around $50 and resold it for $100.
The new buyer sent them an email with a copy of a big auction house catalog to show that it was a rare piece and it sold for $28,000.

I won an auction last year, a lot of jewelry, all junk except for one piece. At least I was pretty sure the one piece was good. I was the 3rd highest bidder, the top two dropped out after the listing ended I think because they chickened out. That was lucky for me since my high bid was $200 and the others were almost twice as much.

Anyway, it was a necklace that I was pretty confident was Pools of Light. Pools of Light is a vintage Deco piece made up of polished orbs of rock crystal. They are not drilled but connected to each other by silver wire wrapped around each and set into a narrow channel carved into the orb. The seller called it a "glass ball necklace".

When I got the lot I tested the necklace and yes, it was rock crystal and silver. I did not alert the seller beforehand because there was no way for me to be sure from a photo, it could have been glass, I am very happy it wasn't :shame: I did let him know what it was after I got it and confirmed the materials.

Now & again I stumble into a cameo I might easily have missed because the description is so sketchy or inaccurate. That one may not be quite sufficiently interesting enough to buy/bid on, but I then check to see what else the seller has that might be flying under the radar. Just once in a while...

And yep, pools of light. For $200 that was a real score.

Post them in a thread in the Ephemera and Photographs section, if you haven't already! I haven't been able to come here for very long today and haven't looked yet.

Yes, I do know some because I collect such photos and have done research on theatre of the 19th century, but... The wealth of knowledge here among the group may exceed what I know. At least it does on a regular basis.
