Can't read the artist's name but do know that "old fisherman" is a type of genre painting. Hundreds of similar were produced; a Google image search will bring up examples.

To get any kind of accurate assesment, you'll want to provide additional pictures, one straight on of the front, another of the back, a readable close-up of the signature, as well as provide dimensions.

The signature looks like "Antony" -and judging by the quality of the work I'm doubting it's done by anyone "known" - might perhaps even be out of a factory. Like Debora said - tons of this theme/subject exist.

To my eye, all the hallmarks of a new or new-ish factory painting.

I worked in a gift shop that sold factory paintings. When you see a single name signature painted like that it's a dead giveaway.

With respect, and I agree that it’s not a valuable painting, I disagree with the single first name statement. May we all find an authentic Vincent, and I’ll be happy to just find another Igor (Pantuhoff).

I was thinking exactly the same.

This one is a surname, even so, a single name we wouldn't mind finding in a thrift store:

Note that I said "painted like that". It's such a common font for those.

OK but I still think that’s a slippery slope of info-just my opinion.

As an artist, I've seen hundreds of these in person. It's a common genre that's been painted thousands of times. I don't see anything in the painting that makes it special. In fact, the painting style makes it look older than the signature which is a modern look. What about the back? What does the canvas look like? Old or new?

It's hard because we all want to believe we've found a precious antique or valuable painting, but mostly it's not going to be so. I've been in the business helping my parents since I was a child. 60 years of experience. Yes, I've been wrong. No one is perfect, but generally you get a feel for things after a time. This isn't even well painted. It's a formula painting. IMG_2295-min.jpg

Totally agreeing with you Bev and I am also from an art family and have an art degree but that’s not what I was addressing. I was merely suggesting that a casual reader who respects your great knowledge could be led astray and dismiss a good painting that was signed with one first name only regardless of the font.

A good rule of thumb (sayeth a long time art dealer whilst donning his flame retardant clothing) is that if a painting doesn't merit a second glance there is little point in looking at the signature let alone trying to research the artist.

Absolutely agree assuming one knows what they’re looking at and given some of the artwork that gets posted I know that many do not know whether a second glance or further research is warranted. Better IMO that they post and ask.

In a perfect world people would visit museums and art galleries to get a better idea about what is out there. Simply picking up any and every piece of art which was dropped off at Goodwill expecting it to be a masterpiece is rather delusional particularly if one does not have a background in art.

At $2 to $15......no one is even looking at more than paint on canvas.....
