I have this coin that I am thinking about selling and coins are NOT my area!! lol :) Can anyone give me a ball park on the grade, I'm thinking "About Uncirculated" I see no wear but she does have a light scratch under her cheek and there are several tiny dots in front of her eyes on the background.
I inherited this coin and a 20$ gold coin as well. The two coins were stored on top of one another with a piece of some kind of paper between. The paper looks almost like the paper you clean your glasses with. The coin has a beautiful even, peachy gold tone to it. My dad said once a year he would turn the coins over...I don't know if that toned it or not but it has a beautiful golden tone with blue, pink, and purple tones as well. The problem is I am having a hard time capturing the color... any tips on how to photograph this coin to show the toning? I think you can get an idea from the pics as to grade and they show a hint of the color. Thanks for any help given?
Also I am thinking I will sell this on ebay, any ideas as to value? I think it will sell well over silver content price, BWDIK? ..thoughts? IMG_9513 copy.jpg IMG_9524 copy.jpg

Now is the low point of the last five years

ebay is a tough place to sell coins

I'd hang on to it for now

I agree, I'd hang onto it unless you are in imminent danger of starvation.

You could post it on the Coin Talk forum for more specialised opinions, there is often a link at the top of this page.

"S" above the "One Dollar" stands for San Francisco mint. You should check to see if that adds to the value.

But I agree with the above, hold on to it for now if you can.

I sold an 1899 Philly one over here at auction last year. (God knows where I got the thing, found it in a box!) It made sixteen dollars after commissions. Mine was in similar condition.

Its a common date Morgan with a mintage of 8,900,000.
Using American grading standards it would grade EF-40, catalog value $25-$30.
On eBay.com (US) you cannot mention the grade in the title unless it has been slabbed and graded by a recognized 3rd party grader.
On any other eBay site you can state any grade you wish, because other countries don`t believe in US grading standards and entombing coins in plastic coffins.
The toning is basically tarnish, it can become enhanced by sulphur or sulfur content in the coin rolls or paper.
This site will give you all the tuition you need for photographing coins.

I'd polish it up and keep it as a lucky coin to pass down to your kids.
The gold coin will net you more funds, but like AFan says, get on the coin forum and research it well.
PS. if coins are NOT your area....learn from those who know!

Don't even touch the surfaces, pick it up by the rim or with fine cotton gloves.

Polishing it would make its value about that of scrap silver. Coins with 'rainbow ' toning fetch a good premium. The US coin people are mad for it.

Never clean any coins. There are few exceptions but in general keep that Brasso in the bottle.

Yes yes...never polish old coins that you may want to sell , or those that have investment value , ect.

But I regularly polish my 1921d Morgan.
I like to play with it, use it for heads or tails , when making important decisions ..it's in great shape , but would be only mid to low grade & I like to feel the silver in my hand and remember back to a time when a pocket full of these coins fired up the jingle jangle of the roaring 20's !!

So yes....DO NOT POLISH old coins.......unless you want a shiny play toy of a bygone era !!

    That's all I meant......
