Featured Art Nouveau & Art Deco glass sculptures - who made them please?

When examples of the larger of these two sculptures began to appear at auction houses (some 35+ years ago) they commanded high prices due to their rarity. The "original" maker still remains a mystery although Daum, France has often been thought to be a possible contender.

Moving forward another 10 years the smaller examples started to appear, in both non-coloured crystal and Selenium pink glass which by comparing to the larger sculpture determined they were produced by the same factory. Light Aqua-Blue examples then suddenly appeared, and also (though scarcer) in Amber glass too, however there are subtle differences to 'the feel' of these modern-day examples and they also tend to carry adhesive paper labels naming the factory as "Cristallin, Italy." It is probably the case that Cristallin now own the original moulds of these sculptures, but I would certainly like to know the original maker and/or their country of origin?

I have often wondered if they originated from USA? I've had examples of the larger sculpture adapted as a lamp with period/vintage metal mounts & USA made electrical fittings which were not modern-day and dated from the 1930s. The non-coloured example (as shown below) also has a metal screw-fixing hole integrally moulded in the glass at time of manufacture. The hole is not evident upon other examples... I have however, seen an example with two holes on its base with metal rods/pegs inserted to secure the sculpture to a marble display stand and to prevent the glass from toppling over.

If you have any ideas as to who originally designed or made these sculptures it would be greatly appreciated. Anything positive to assist further research about either piece would be a blessing.

Hmmm, I don't know who the maker is or was. The only sculptor I can even think of would be Mats Jonasson. He makes absolutely beautiful sculptures but normally signs his work. Maybe if you contacted him, being the expert he is, that he could help you.

Don’t know if this info may help but the design looks based on Andre Eduardo Marty’s Vogue design.

Thank you for those. I haven't seen one in Lucite before! I've also found this glass one today. For Sale in USA

I still wonder if the sculptor originates from USA and not Italy. They seem to be on sale there more often. The Lucite example is also of further interest. I may be the case that nobody owns the copyright?

Your post as been very helpful. I has lead me towards A E Marty's original artwork poster, copies of which can be purchased via the following link. I'm going to buy one to use as a background behind one of my sculpture's. I reckon it will look a pretty cool display?

The plot thickens! If I can find out who owns the copyright of the artwork, maybe it will lead towards the maker of the sculpture? Mind you, I think copyright laws only last for a certain length of time??? Perhaps The Courtauld Institute owns it?

 

If you ask the Courtauld Institute, they should know who owns the copyright since they are selling copies of it. I found a Wikipedia article about the Gazette du Bon Ton. It refers to contracts they had with some couture houses, and also indicates that the magazine "employed" illustrators, including Marty:

So a question might be whether this illustration was purposely done for the magazine or not? Also, since it was a French magazine, copyright law from other countries may come into play. In general, anything published before 1925 is currently considered to be in the public domain. But you can look at this helpful guide from Cornell University:

The artwork is dated c1924 which may account for the delay in production & appearance of the sculptures perhaps. The bottom of the publication states: Forbidden reproduction (in French)

I guess my best course of action is to contact The Courtauld Institute, to see what they have to say, if they're willing enough.

 

Does anybody recognise this smaller piece as being influenced by an Art Nouveau poster? Something by Alphonse Mucha perhaps, or the likes of?
