Featured Thoughts on this coral pendant?

I don't own this piece but I came across it for sale, and found it to be quite fantastic. Disappointing that it's damaged. How old do you suspect such a carving is? Is the setting newer?

The flowers remind me of Chinese soapstone carvings.

It's about 1.5" x 1.5"

I suspect it's nineteenth century and from somwhere like Sicily.

Contemporary, Chinese carving. Have seen this kind of mount on Italian pieces but in this case suspect also Chinese.

The eye is a major clue. Seems like Asian carvers are great at picking up on western styles but when it comes to eyes they stick with what they know. This one is like a long-haired version of the ubiquitous Headband Girl (my name).

 

I agree. The coral also looks like Pacific coral imo. A very pretty piece, with beautiful layered carving.
