A man who runs a house clearance company in England found a strange necklace with carved bone and antlers on a woven cord in the empty building he was clearing. He intended to take it to a jumble sale (flea market) to sell for 15 British pounds. Luckily, an antiques auction house was nearby and the man decided to ask Ewbanks Auctioneers what they thought. They realized it was an old ethnic piece and priced it between 60 and 100 pounds. Before the sale started, the phones were busy with preliminary bids and the auction house realized others knew what the necklace was. There were three competing bidders, one from Australia, one from Europe and one in the room from Britain. The winning price of 99,000 pounds – that’s $157,917 including buyer’s premium and fees – was met with applause. The necklace is a rarity, thought to be a fertility necklace from the Cook Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. There is an identical one in the Museum of New Zealand.

Oh, Kovels - a jumble sale isn't a flea market, damnit! And you can't sell your own stuff at one.

    I despair of them.

Isn't a jumble sale where they sell second hand things for a specific charity? Like a church collecting toys and clothes etc from parishioners to sell, and the proceeds go towards repairs?

How large is the house clearance industry in the U.K.? Is there similar operations in mainland Europe?

Culturally we in the U.S. seem to have the families of the deceased clean out homes themselves or arrange for estate sale or estate auction companies come in to market the material processions that are no longer needed. We do have junk hauling businesses where they provide you with a dumpster that you can fill or junk guys/gals that come to your residence/business where you can direct them on what you want them to take. Largely I think a lot of folks let a lot of useable and potentially collectable items of the deceased go to the landfill unfortunately.

How do things work in your neck of the woods.

Spot on aj, that's exactly what a jumble sale is. No private sellers generally. You do get what are called table top sales, where a church rents out a table.

Spot on, but they are all but dead now, having been replaced by car boot sales.

A nice trip out on a summers day. In France the equivalent is a pouce or broccante.

I guess jumble sales are called rummage sales around here.

Do you mean marché aux puces? That is a flea market.:)
Brocante is any second hand trade, as far as I know. We use the word in Dutch too.

You do still get occasional jumbles here, although table top and hosted car boot sales are more common.

Never mind summer's day, I'd do them when it's snowing, damnit. LET ME AT THEM!

I'm in dire need of a boot sale or a brocante. I did sell some stuff to an antique store today and had a rummage in their jewelry baggies, but it's not the same.
