I have a pair of dresser bottles purchased in the 1970's. Each is 5 1/2" tall, including stopper.

Is this surface called a diamond pattern? a quilt pattern?

The surface of the bottles is not sharp to the touch, but the stoppers are.

    Thanks very much!

Looks like a diamond point pattern from a better maker. The cut shut pig tail looks to have been ground and polished. Could be US or Europe.

Thank you very much, George! I know it was purchased in the 70's at a high-end store in CT, but it has no markings or stickers, so I don't know where it was made.

Can't see in your photos, but is there a little X on each point?

    Thanks, Marie.

On the stoppers, yes, there are little x's. On the bottles themselves, there are not.

I don't know what it means that they're different, but as I mentioned earlier, the stoppers feel sharp to the touch, and the bottles themselves do not.

I know that they were purchased new as a set; my grandfather gave them to me when I was a young teen, for my brand new "dressing table." I even remember where he purchased them.

Thanks again, everyone, for any & all insight and input!

I would assume a marriage, the stoppers are Westmoreland's English Hobnail and the bottles Diamond Point by someone else.

    Thanks so much, Marie!

Well, I wonder how that marriage could have happened. I do know that they were bought new, exactly as I've shown them, from a very reputable store. I doubt I will ever know!

    Thanks again.

Thanks so much, TallCakes! Wow - that first one really looks mighty familiar!

I am now more confused than ever. I KNEW that my grandfather gave me those bottles, and I was pretty darn sure they were new at the time.

You're not going to believe this, but after seeing your post, I actually pulled out my old teenage-years diaries and went looking for confirmation of what I remembered. I used to write down just about everything. (Wow - interesting reading!)

Anyway, I was off a bit on exactly when I got the bottles (I thought it was later than it was,) but it seems to have been at the end of my first year in boarding school.

I've transcribed a bit of that diary here. (June 19th probably would have been about when I got home from school for the summer.)

    ...

Gerry Smith has finished redoing my bedroom! I now have a dressing table built into the little alcove next to my closets. Gerry said the room is too dark, but I like it that way. Mom put a big mirror over the dressing table because she says it will reflect the light from the nearby window. I'm just glad she didn't let Gerry paint the paneling.

I can't say I like the fabric Mom used for my curtains, the bedspread, and the skirt on the dressing table, because I'm really not all that fond of green and pink, but I do have to admit it does look pretty! The redo was a surprise, and I didn't have any say in picking out the colors or anything else. I think I will learn to like it.

Pop surprised me by getting me a new pair of “dresser bottles” at (name of store redacted). Mom said he really did pick them out himself, although she went with him. I put them on Grandma's old dresser tray, the one with the gold edge and the mirror, where I keep my perfume and little boxes and things. I had the blue and white striped ones that were Grandma's before, but I guess the colors wouldn't really go with the new color scheme, anyway. I wonder where Mom put them?

Just for the record, Gerry Smith was a carpenter who did a lot of work for my Mom (who was an interior designer) and "Pop" is what we always called my grandfather, who died in 1979.

I'm pretty sure the store where these were purchased did NOT sell used/antique items, so it's still a mystery!

I think that same listing may be on eBay. I wouldn't put too much stock in the listing mentioning 'antique' since no specific ID information is noted. So could very easily be vintage c1970. The name of the store probably wouldn't matter unless it's a established recognized name.

Thank you again, TallCakes. The store is no longer, but it was a high-end department store in its day.
