This is approx an inch, have no idea what it is. have googled medals etc but doesn't really look like a medal.

Oh is it a watch fob perhaps? Someone just commented on my FB post...didn't even occur to me that it could be that

It's approx an inch, has a name (W. McMillan) on one side and 1906 on the other xx

I would not have thought "medal" in the military sense. At one inch, it might have been attached to a much larger "badge" of some kind.

1906 was the San Francisco earthquake, so I looked for Wm McMillan associated with that.
There are hundreds of Wm McMillans and I didn't find anything

Goodness...I cannot get the hang of this for some reason

I didn't think it was a medal either, but as always I was clueless and had no idea at all, medal was the only thing I could think of!
    Thank you x x x

Looks like the piece was die stamped and the disc was engraved and inserted into the "bezel".The engraving isn't bad but they left the guidelines on the disc after engraving the name.Possibly from a fraternal/business group of some type.

I don't know what conclusion to draw from this observation, but the current bail & jump ring are a different metal from the cross, either replacing an original that might have snapped off or converting something that did not hang originally into something that does.

Edit: It does strike me as being an award of some type, not military, given annually so that just the year was sufficient for the date.

It is definitely different materials, well different colours anyway. It's a sweet little thing, and an award given annually makes perfect sense.
    Thanks Cuz x xxx

Just a thought after a nice glass of creme de cassis and dry cider,it could be a modified fireman's Maltese cross which is a common fire department symbol in the states.

My Dad,Uncles and Grandad were all firemen so that would be ace! Don't know if it would apply in England but gives me plenty more to search x x x
    Thank you again x x

Bog standard watch chain fob. To start another hare, Macmillan is a Scottish clan name. Maybe it belonged to a Scots fireman? Or a staff member of the Macmillan publishing company. Or an ancestor of the British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Or indeed, a German spy who had to remind himself what name he was using.

Looking at it again it is obviously the Edwardian equivalent of a customised coffee mug. The surrond is stock design (nothing at all to do with US firemen) and the buyer would pick his name from a selection of popular names and have it pressed into the centre of the fob.
You can probably buy 'personalsed ' key chain fobs on the same principle today.

I agree, a standard but pretty watch fob which you could have your name engraved in. Star and cross shapes were very popular at the time.
Maybe a gift from a wife or sweetheart.

I don’t know what it is, but i’m inclined to believe it was given to signify something (award, achievement, years of service), the main reason I think this: why would someone take the time to put the date on the back?

    Most definitely a watch fob.

Everyman and his dog had a pocket watch so they had watch fobs and changed them around on a regular basis.

Some were awards for sport, football, cricket, boxing etc, some were unnoficial regimental awards.
Some were named and dated others were left blank
Some had hallmarks if they were gold or silver.

Here`s a bunch I`ve just taken out the drawer, mostly hallmarked silver.
They date from the late 1890`s to the early 30`s.
