Ceramic Cream Smoking Desk Set Pan Fountain Dog

This is my dads. Bought it a few weeks ago. There’s a little damage both corner have been off haha .

Wondering if anyone can make anything of the marks on the base. Somebody must have also used this as a calendar too by the looks of it.

Love the image of pan or some kind of green man but I thought it was more likely pan. Almost like the devil on your shoulder while your smoking haha. Too early a piece for the maker to be aware of the dangers though

Can’t find an exact one but some yelloware that is similar. The marks match the format used by them exactly also as well as the majolica style being similar

I think it’s a bear.....

Maybe it held 5¢ cigars. Drop your nickel in the bowl and take a cigar and a match.

 

Reading up a little bit just, Bernard Bloch were very well known for making these smoking sets.
So it’s not a surprise that a business may have bought one.
I think it is a dog though rather than a bear looking at it now

 

Is there a striker area?​

 

Yeh it’s at the bottom on the front, it all blends into the creamness xD

 

Dog. Wrong snout for bear. But the "Green Man" is marvelous!

 

He’s definately supposed to be pan or the devil. I don’t know why I said green man he even has horns xD

 

There is a space in his mouth, maybe to hold a match?

 

I think it is meant to represent a Pan fountain, which is probably why the dog is looking into the basin (ready to drink), and there is a bucket by the side.

 

I think Satyr rather then Pan specifically. Pan is usually shown with his pipes.

Maybe @dgbjwc found a reference for marks on his?

 

I first thought satyr too, but when I looked it up, just to be sure, satyrs were depicted without horns. Confusing.

So my first thought was right, thank you. And I remembered fountains with these heads were always called satyr fountains.

 

I didn't find anything really definitive regarding the mark. I based my ID on the similarity to the mark on other Bloch pieces. I'm afraid I don't know my mythology well enough to comment on the fountain decoration. A very interesting piece. Shame about the damage but looks like it might be a relatively easy repair.
