    The post was approved (of course ;)) and I received this reply almost immediately:
    "I'm afraid this is a modern tourist type carving of no value to collectors."

    I hope this is not too much of a disappointment.:sorry:

    Just a little more info, to them 'modern' is any time later than the period netsuke were worn. One of the site moderators says in a general info thread on modern 'netsuke-like objects' that most date from the 1940s, and most were not made in Japan.

    I figured as much. I've seen this figure with many different shapes. Mine has a level of detail that I hoped pointed to a Japanese source. I think if it had great value he would have figured out a way to sell it. Thanks for the information. If I wanted to have fantasy, I wouldn't ask. I still love it. I may rub its belly for good luck. :)
