Just an uneducated, unresearched guess, but, going by the depiction of the uniforms and terrain, and the typography, perhaps this is commemorating the Zulu War of 1879...?

Could be the Zulu Wars or even the Boer War.
Notice the Victoria Cross top edge.
The VC was awarded in both wars.

Bottom should be the first side.

In the picture with the Scotsman, the wounded officer is stepping on something with a number on it. Maybe that makes sense to someone.

ineed, we too had noticed what might be a "26" on what might be some sort of equipment satchel, and the British 26th Regiment -- the Cameronians -- were in fact a Scottish regiment. However, at a cursory check, they do not seem to have been involved between the 1850s and 1881 (when they were absorbed into the 90th) in any large-scale battles such as those depicted on the tin.

That seems to be a knapsack. They were carried on the back.

The combination of uniforms and flags on this tin is probably greatly stylized.

The guy in red and blue on the side with the word VICTORY (with the Highlander - in a very indistinct tartan) seems to be wearing a 9th Queen's Royal Lancers dress uniform, but the 9th & the Highlanders did not serve together in the Crimean War (which the scene sort of/maybe appears to be) although they did serve together in India and at the beginning of WWI. India probably would not have been "celebrated" with the VICTORY logo, which to my mind, brings thing back to WWI...

I've sort of given up trying to make sense of the combination of uniforms/flags shown. I'm thinking it's more of a patriotic WWI item for the folks back home.

That would be my guess; those old uniforms were a lot prettier than the ones issued to the WWI soldiers.

That is not WWI, my Grandfather fought in WWI in 1914 and he never wore anything like those uniforms, they slept in trenches not tents.
Its a Victorian scene, as I said before, there are Victoria Crosses displayed, many were awarded in the Zulu wars and Boer Wars.

Yes, But in their discussions they indicate it is English and suggest the Boer war etc. Also helped to get the missing scenes.

Sorry, I don't know that I made myself clear. Like Terry, I do not think this DEPICTS WWI, only that is was probably made then to inspire patriotism.

I think the soldiers shown are all based on real units, but I don't believe that the actual scenes and combinations of uniforms, flags, etc are completely realistic.
