Welcome aboard. Putting the material pottery or glass in your title will help get you the right eyeballs. I can only tell you this is baked dirt which you already knew.

Welcome to the Forum, Troutyman! :) You’ve got the photos done properly, so that’s a good start. :snaphappy:. But, as suggested starting a new thread is best. Anyway, Welcome!

    Hello,

This is an English toby jug. Probably from 1900-1950s I'd say. I've collected tobys for 40 yrs. The mark doesn't tell me anything about it. But by the way it looks, I can tell it's from England. A number of potters made this toby. I know many tobys name. I wish I could tell you the name of this toby. But I'm not familiar with the exact name of this one and I do not own one. He is standing with his head slightly turned and a jug of ale held in his left hand, while his right hand is cupping the jug.

Tobys got their name from the original toby made for Toby Philpot. It is not known if he was real or a character in a book, but he is known as nothing more than a drunkard and a sailor.

Yours is not Toby Philpot because he is sitting down. But there are many, many different tobys.

I hope I given you some incite and helped in some small way.
    Dana
