Featured ABP - Two Hawkes and A Mystery Piece

I bought these three wonderful American Brilliant Period pieces from the reseller's treasures. One of them is astonishing. Something I've never seen before, though, my experience is very limited. It looks like they cut it and then crimped it. It is astonishingly heavy. I couldn't find a mark, but I'm hoping that someone recognizes the maker by this perhaps signature technique. I would also like some conjecture on the two Hawkes pieces as to what their purpose was. The purpose now is too sit around and be beautiful, but they must have been used for something in the past.

1. The mystery piece is 3 inches tall and 8 inches in diameter at its widest point. It is too heavy for my scale which bottoms out at 7 lbs. Since it is not marked, perhaps, it is not ABP, but I'm hoping it is.
2. The second piece, the first Hawkes, is 9 1/2 inches long, 6 1/4 inches wide and 2 inches tall. I was able to somewhat get a picture of the mark. Use?
3. The third piece has a Hawkes mark, I've seen it, but I couldn't find it to show you in a photo. It is 3 inches tall, 12 inches long and 5 1/2 inches wide. Maybe someone can tell me where to find it. Use?

Any thoughts, considerations, and sharing of any kind would most sincerely appreciated.

 

Nope, glass cannot be manipulated once it's been cut. Good cutters are real artists.

Good pictures, you might need a larger light box, however.

Thank you. I couldn’t imagine how they would cut that deep on the curve. I take it you have seen this crimped work. I have a bigger light box. Would it hell to take pictures in it for you to see?

 

More pictures, no, I really know nothing about the products of the cutting shops, just about glass in general.

The best pictures I've seen of cut glass use a black background so the cutting patterns are easier to see. Not that you need to do that now, but for future reference it might help.

FYI a lot of Brilliant cut glass was not marked, but those that are often appear in the side of a deeper cut. They can be tough to find. I have several pieces that I inherited only 1 of which has been identified (Here! ) and I have never found the mark. I have another with a script letter D but I have no idea whose mark that is.

 

I have a black background for my lightbox (I am a photography nut). I'll try some new pictures. These are already in my new Howard Miller Curio cabinet, and there to stay. If I run across a D mark, I'll be sure to tell you. Thanks for the suggestions of where to find marks.

 

Take the pictures in black and white too.

Very pretty! I love sparkling cut glass and although I'm disappointed that generally values have gone down... it is good to buy now!

He had 10 pieces, many by famous makers. He wanted comparatively little for them. I just have no place for more than the three I got and that was a tight fit because I already had two small bowls. I love the idea of all these glass cutters making beauty for the table. Thank you.

Great photos. I have some similar glass that I inherited from my grandparents, but I will be darned if I can get a decent photograph.

 

I have been wanting some very nice ABP for a while. I have told the reseller that I spent all the money I have made for the last two years selling things like a generator, old furniture and some small bric beac that I’ve had for years and still I have had to dip into other resources. I haven’t shown some pieces yet and they like these were the more expensive things. I figured there would not be another opportunity like this to buy a picker’s personal pieces. So far it’s working out well.

 

Taking photos of glass has proven difficult but I’m going to take @Bakersgma suggestion and try to get better ones. Thank you.

 

A woman who was the ABP guru on the eBoo glass board always recommended taking photos against blue sky, it makes for stunning photos!

 

There is a Facebook group "American Cut Glass Association discussion group". Very knowledgeable folk willing to help with id's and pointing to references. They've helped me.
