I don't have any questions for once; I just wanted to show this incredible rattan/wicker child's rocking chair I found at a local thrift store yesterday for $20!
I looked up others to get an idea of it's value & was surprised they are only selling for around $50! But I also didn't see any as ...ornate(?) as mine. Look at this thing from the back!
Also unusual - the seat kinda looks like those antique toilets that used to look like a regular chair only you could lift the seat to have a toilet. And when you look down at the wood ring it looks like they took a child's toilet & weaved in rattan to make it a regular chair seat!?
Aw heck! Just one question? (lol) Any idea of it's age? It has older looking (like when I was a kid - 60s - 70s old, not turn of the century old!) nails in the bottom.
    Thanks - and enjoy it!

Sort of a child's peacock chair. Wonder if such things were used ceremonially in some situations. Maybe not this particular specimen, but can see some newly recognized Dalai or Panchen Lama sitting in one. Suspect AJ will have much to say. Dionysus was thought to have spent some of his early life in India:

Perhaps I'm the exception but... I don't see anything "old" about that chair, not the design, not the proportions, not the construction, not the caning, not... anything.

If I had to guess I would say newer as well, but honestly I've never seen anything quite like it. Seems like it must be from another country where labor is cheaper since there is a fair amount of work in it. Was thinking maybe 1970's when wicker was so popular, or maybe newer? Sure is an unusual piece. Thanks for sharing.

It would be fine with a cushion. Looks very new to me too, but still think the right kid would love it.

LOL! Your post made me think of a child's pottery seat with rockers on it. What a splashy mess that could be! I would have bought this chair too because it's so unique and shows intricate workmanship. People who collect life size dolls would love it. A chair for their Chuckie!

I find cameos are a resource completely overlooked by art & costume historians, but the range of what has been depicted on them is vast.
