    Anyone know what kind of knife my father in law has bought and maybe an age?

    Knife could be an ambitious term. He bought a handle with the remains of a blade. It looks like it has been submerged in water for most of its life.
    @komokwa, do you see anything familiar?

    Handle is solid. He bringing it tomorrow so i can get more photos if anyone can tell me what would be a good area to photo

    The entire knife on a white background is fine. It looks like there could be marks on the top, if so it is best to clean those and take a closeup photo of the top as well.

    Looks like sterling or possibly plated.
    Need a closer look at this area

    Me personally, I'd try some silver polish on it.

    That's a tough one....from here it looks like a clip point carving knife.
    More like cutlery than a fighting knife.
    Brass handle with a steel blade & it's been in the moist ground for quite some time....

    That's my 1st impression.......

    He is coming tomorrow so i will ask some questions and see if he willing to clean it so we can have better look.

    Ya, if he bought that....there musta bin a story behind it.....cuz there ain't no knife left there !
    Ask him what he was told about the handle..!

    Just told hubby whats been said on here and he said his dad paid £1 from a mate.
    Now thats what he says. He is an old ex minor who cannot tell you straight what he pays for anything. Unless i buy it on eBay for him lol. He may have paid £1 or he may of paid £10. He is also tighter then a goldfishes bum lol

    OOOOOH, and I thought it was a bone handle!!!!! Now, when you say brass, it starts to look brass......me and my tinted glasses for the computer!!!!!:wacky::wacky::wacky:

    It was found via a metal defector in york and the man that found it has since past away.
    That is all i know
