    Hello all

I bought this pretty little jar yesterday but I'm not sure what to call it. Or how old it is. Or where it is from. Glazed jasperware would be my amatuer attempt at naming the style, doesn't get any results on Google though

    Around 5" tall

My first thought was Mocha Ware upon seeing the checkerboard decoration.

But I don't know that I've ever seen it with "jasperware" decor.

I'm sure others will be able to ID it properly.

it's called sprigged ware. Probably English, early 19th or before. There's a very good Facebook page for this stuff. If my brain weren't fried with the heat, I'd remember the maker (s).

Dudson pottery did the black and white "Gordon" pattern and was also known for its jasper ware. The pieces were not marked Dudson but sometimes marked Patent Mosaic. I'm getting this info from Audrey Dudson's book "A Pottery Panorama", but I'm not finding any photos online that resemble your piece. Check to see if the bottom of your piece is marked, usually on or near the rim. I'm not saying your lovely piece is Dudson, but it looks very similar to the type of jasper ware they produced 1870s to 1880s.

Not all Dudson is marked, I've some early pieces that aren't. Some have a pad mark. I still can't remember who I'm thinking of!

Thanks everyone, I think late 19th Sprigged Ware is the winner. I can't find anything similar yet but will keep looking and report back.

Definitely no marks, I checked everywhere. Isn't going to be worth too much, lots a fleabites, a hairline crack and a repaired lid, but pretty nonetheless and has encouraged me to do some research.

It's earlier than that. Stick it on the Sprigged Jugs Facebook page, see what they say.

As Owned says, it's earlier. It's probably pearlware or similar and it's a type of dipped ware with applied sprigs.

I've got a similarly made jug without the sprigs.

Here are a few photos from the book "Mocha and related dipped wares, 1770-1930" by Jonathan Rickard. They all date to the last of the 18th Century.
