    Hi Everyone!

First time posting. I bought this chandelier today from someone on NextDoor for our 1927 house. I have been looking for information on it and I can't find anything. My best guess is turn-of-the-century or a little later. I can't figure out what to search, even. It's so weird and I love it but I'd like to get a little more info on it.

Any pointers or ideas would be great!

Neo-Renaissance chandelier ca. 1915-20. Nicely elaborated and quite appropriate for a 1927 house.

I don't see any maker's marks. Any thoughts on where it might have come from? US made or...?

The person I bought it from got it at an antique store in LA several years ago for a song. It's been rewired but it needs a new ring for one of the chain links and that part that cups against the ceiling (sorry not sure of the part name).

Canopy is the name of the missing piece.

Thank you! I saw it and just had hearts coming out of my eyes. I left work for a little bit to go pick it up.

I spent some time doing some research last night. I have a theory.

First: I took the fixture to a lighting salvage shop in town to buy a canopy. The lady who runs the place has been dealing with lighting for 60-some years and she was just amazed at this piece. She tried to buy it from me! She said she’d never seen anything like it.

Second: I know it came from an antique shop in LA. The faces on the fixture remind me of Greek gods or something. My theory is that this came out of a theater (there were several turn-of-the-century theaters torn down in LA). It could have been made for the theater and that’s why it’s so unique. I’m still trying to figure out who the faces represent.

Also, the fixture is really heavy—probably 30lbs or so.

I love it! I'm not so sure about the theater idea, I would expect it to be much larger if it were used in a theater.

The heads are all over the place but none is Classical Greek. One set appear to be conquistadores.

Oh! That makes sense too. Conquistadores
I was thinking the lobby or something but you're right that they would be larger.

The heads underneath look like the Conquistadores. Then there are heads on the ball portion that look like elves or some kind of priests? Maybe Egyptian faces on the arms?

Don't think Egyptian as they were typically depicted beardless or with narrow false beards. The heads on arms appear to be Renaissance-inspired. A stylized version of something like this.

    Ah, more Spanish-inspired faces then.

Not Egyptian, but there is a "show biz" element to these heads that does suggest a theater of some sort. Maybe in the lobby? Don't know. There are theaters - The Fabulous Fox in St. Louis for example - that have a Mesopotamian element. Sometimes its a mishmash that's best categorized as "exotic."

The Renaissance example I posted was a portrait of Sir Francis Drake.

Think this may be just a tad later ... 20s-30s and certainly appropriate for your house. Could see this being from one of the many 20s-30s Spanish revival homes from the LA area. I do not think the fitter cups and candle sockets are original to this fixture. Think it probably has glass drop-in or clip-on shades.
