than I know about it. Can somebody let me know their view on whether it is just a black and white vase or a National treasure. Thanks.

Why is there a hole in the lid? Is there a stopper missing?
More intriguing is why is there a maker's or period mark on the bottom of the pot, or is that the underside of the lid?

The mark is for the Jiaqing emperor, however when you see a red stamped mark like this you can be sure it is a reproduction and most are post war. I suspect this one is later 20th century. The hole is probably just so you can get a finger in to lift the lid off, it's just a decorative item so it doesn't have any significance aside the aesthetic or function.

Thank you. That was one out of the two answers I expected, would have preferred the other one.

Does it tell a story or are they random pictures?

    Thank you @Ce BCA

I'm still not clear about whether there's also a hole in the bottom (lamp).

I'm not up enough on Chinese history to be able to tell, sorry. It could be either.

Very nice. It's not a vase though. Made as a lamp. The glaze in the hole in the bottom shows the holes were made before glazing.

My impression is that the line through the fence in photo three resulted in it being unfinished and junked. The catch is that it has a stamp on the bottom indicating it's finished. Strange beast.

If you follow that line to the left and up, it looks like a kite line, maybe?

I think you are absolutely right. It goes to a bird kite or a supersonic plane. So that justifies the finished stamp. Thanks for the sharp eyes.
