    Hi!
I have found this exact same brooch on etsy described as Victorian celluloid brooch, but it somehow looks newer to me. Maybe some of you are more knowledgeable than me.
It is not obvious in the photos, but it has a c clasp. (I hope that is how it is called.)
    Thank you all!

Victorian in design, from the back I would agree celluloid and the pin stem and clasp look late Victorian. JMHO :)

Thank you very much! That would be a nice surprise. It looks mint in life.

It is lovely, Vic. And the hand is holding a fan, what's not to like.:)

These (gloved) hands are an old symbol that goes in and out of fashion. The last years of the Victorian era was one of the 'hand fashion' periods, which looks right for the hinge and clasp.

Nifty piece. My guess is another of the early plastics, not Celluloid.

Catalin, for example. If it smells of milk when warmed, galalith. There were a number of polymers besides Celluloid, it's just that Celluloid & Bakelite are the ones we all know best.

I always thought catalin and galalith came in use later, around the same time as bakelit.
