Would you buy a pitcher with repaired handle?

I did.
This 8" tall Pitcher was hand painted by E. W. Donath I think around the turn of the Century. I haven't figured out the other mark. But they bought the blanks and hand painted them.

Donath is a tough sell these days especially with damage and no artist signature. Even Pickard isn't going for what it did a few years ago.

I've got a soft spot for Donath pieces, so for a buck I would have bought it.

I believe we saw a thread on the J&C mark a few days ago but I don't recall on what piece.

 

I never heard of the maker before but for a dollar, it is worth it. Enjoy.

I have a soft spot for broken pots. Many of the hundreds of pots I own are in damaged condition. It all depend on why you want it I guess. I've always been interested in examples of different makers, different types, different materials, different shapes and different patterns, (especially 18th C). They serve my purposes however they will need a very special type of future home to prevent their total demise.

 

Well honestly my first thought was "I Can fix that". It's painted couldn't be too hard?

 

I've fixed some too and un-fixed some. There is a product called Milliput which is a two part epoxy clay that I've used with some good success. Of course the painting and glazing to blend is as difficult as the modeling. Gold...kinda hard to match.

 

More concerned with the poor previous repair. This handle was broken in 5 places and haphazardly repaired.

 

From 5 ft distance nobody will know. Pitcher body with the flower is the focal point. Nobody would bother much with handle. Btw, is that iris flower?

 

I strongly disagree - buyers will heavily discount the value because of the severe damage.

I love buying slightly damaged cups and pitchers as planters and vases. A cracked transfer ware cup with a planted flower (I love a small orchid in it) is lovely. The crack is turned toward the wall and while it certainly diminishes its value it doesn’t diminish my enjoyment - I don’t even see it). And I pay $1-2.

 

I would have passed. I have a couple of damaged pieces in my collections but I don't collect either Jaeger or Donath.

 

My neighbor bought it from me for $5.00. He said he sold it for 10. Ya never know
