Cloisonne Quiry

  1. HI,
I'm new to the group after looking at a site that was listed for history/info on cloisonne. I just purchased a cloisonne fold out jewelry box that I'm trying to find out when it was made and its value. It is Chinese, silk lined, brass bottom with no marking. Has an inside mirror as well. Measures 5x5x5. Anyone out there have any clues?
    Thanks

I'm just taking a wild stab - I'm not sure that your box is very old by Chinese standards. Maybe early to mid 1900's.

And it's a different type of cloisonne that I'm not familiar with.
Are you sure it is Chinese and not from India?

    Welcome Bangles.
It is a gorgeous box. To me it looks like Indo-Persian champlevé enamel.
You're right, the style is Indo-Persian, so NW India or Pakistan. The heavy, rather roughly made clasp, the handle, the type of enamel and technique are typical for the Indian sub-continent.
The enamel looks made in the champlevé technique, so designs cut out of the metal, rather than strips of metal soldered on flat metal, or the metal is cast with a design. The design is filled in with enamel.
Most Indian and Pakistani enamel is made using this technique, although cloisonné (using soldered strips for the design) is seen as well, particularly on antique pieces.

Could we see a closeup just to be sure it is champlevé and not cloisonné?
And could we see the inside and the bottom as well? That would help with the time frame.

Thanks so much for this information. Next question: any idea of its value? P9137874.jpg P9137875.jpg P9137905.jpg

  7. I'd like to thank both of you for responding. Any Jewelry, do you agree on the dating? My next question is what is it worth then?, since its not at all what I thought it was.

This style is still being made in India, but these days it's usually rather crude printed and pressed metal.
