    DA8D5415-AE88-4C53-AD2C-D24294585A4A.jpeg Hi all.

Got this at estate sale for $2.00. It's about two inches long and 1/2 inch thick. It is solid. Looks like it was from a key chain but not sure. It is pretty heavy. Any idea what metal it is? It's cute so adding to my keychain.

    Thanks ;)

Probably is brass or brass plated zinc.

You could start by seeing if a magnet attracts it. I doubt it will. Depending on how badly you want to know, you could scratch a little area and see if it reveals yellow or silver. Yellow being brass and silver being zinc. Since there really isn't an inconspicuous spot on the piece, I would not recommend that.

Brass is popular for this sort of thing. Anything plated would quickly get scratched if actively used on a key chain.

If I did not know any better I would swear this was gold but it would be too good to be true. I cleaned it and looks so lovely. Is this what brass looks like when polished? See pictures below. I took a pic front and back but no markings. 9BAD61E9-6C6E-4940-9669-A8E454C9CC52.jpeg 9AE0AA17-F1AE-4914-AC27-E5F35A3BA37D.jpeg

Gold can tarnish - or at least, the metal it's mixed with in lower carat stuff can.

This was my uncle's ring. I found it in a grubby wooden box in the shed underneath a lot of old nails and other junk. It was black. I thought it was part of a copper pipe, but something made me take it out and rub it on my jeans. Lo and behold it was his wedding ring, chucked into the box after his divorce from my aunt. I can't wear my own ring on my fat fingers, but his fits perfectly. ;)

Wow!!! How awesome is that ;) My hubby told me to have it checked out. He doesn't even know what the metal is. I wonder if there is a test I can do at home without having to buy a kit or something to that effect. I looked at the heart again an it looks like gold but I am not sure as it has some areas that have little pocs or dings and specks. Any who, sharing your story helped. Never knew gold tarnished.

Thanks. I won't believe everything so called experts write on internet. The site I went to said gold never tarnishes. I learned something new from you and some other folks in the forum so thanks again for sharing :D
