    Hi Everyone,

Cam I get your thoughts on this table please? I’ve never seen one with the flared sides and the hollows. It had a dark varnish, as can be seen in the poor first photo. Stripped that off and I think it looks better. Hopefully haven’t done any harm? Can always redo it.

The top measures 40cm x 37cm. And it’s 43cm to the table top and 44.5cm to top of the raised sides. I’m in the UK.

TIA as ever for any help.

I know nothing about furniture, so take this for what it is worth. Is it the right height for a stool?

No, it’s a little too high I think and wouldn’t be sturdy enough but thanks.

I think the sides were added to minimize the waste of wood and make the table little bigger. Can’t think of any other function. Bit unusual the way they did it. It’s beautiful oak. My preference is to keep it dark for this type of table but the beauty of all oak is only visible and appreciated if you strip the paint or dark stain. Very nice.

I think that's a footstool missing its chair.

Do mean something like a cushion on top? I still think it’s a little high. Currently trying to measure my feet 40cm off the floor lol.

I think it started life as something different, or as some things different. Finish seems too crude for the melon stem. I would call it a tray on stand.

Thanks Fern. Not heard the term melon style before but I agree with you, does look like an odd mix.

They call them many other things too. Maybe you could try your hand at some carving or decorating on the feet for a more unified look.

I usually like things left in their original condition but in this case I love the wood now it’s stripped and you can see the grain. It lightens it for a more modern look.
