Anyone able to approximate worth and date of manufacture?

Yeah, that's why I inserted 'style' lamp. I'm quite sure it wasn't made in the 1700s.

I'd say it was worth more than $300 CDN., as I was going to buy it for it's original price of $400.

Not what I wanted to hear, but that's okay; I'm not planning on selling this lounge anyways.

    but to me....
younger folks don't even know what it is, and have no room for such a large furniture item,
and older folks are downsizing ..
so your demographic , and space , allows for such items to be brought into the home , at prices well below what it may have sold for 30 years ago..
    IMO...

    Komo's not wrong.

This is an unusually nice example, and worth what you're paying. If you've been following this site, you know that brown furniture has been in a pricing free fall for something like 15-20 years. Komo did a good job of summarizing why.

Since you're planning on keeping this piece, and obviously have the aesthetic sense to give it value, then $300-$400 isn't bad, though of course from your point of view cheaper is better. There are signs that the long furniture depression may slowly end in the next few years, but I'm not counting on it recovering in my lifetime.

So, like you, I've been buying the pieces I love, and love to live with. Prices are still generally low, as long as you don't plan on ever seeing that money again. Because you may or may not. Regardless, look at your purchase as in investment in you and your happiness, and if you make your money back in 30 or 40 years, call it good.

Now if you want to talk about the very top of the market, which we're not, then that's a totally different thing.....

Thank you both for talking some sense in me. And yes, I can see that prices have plummeted for a great number of antiques (perhaps even most antiques).

In a way it saddens me that most of what I've invested so much in is going downhill in value, but it shouldn't really matter as I don't flip, and I tend to buy with the mind of keeping an antique for life.
